Romania as a Gateway to the EU and CEE Markets

Romania can be a useful first European market or regional operating base for selected Asian brands, but it should be chosen because the product and economics fit — not simply because it appears lower-cost.

When Romania can make sense

Commercial testing

Modern retail, international chains and a sizeable consumer base can provide a meaningful test market for selected FMCG categories.

CEE / Southeast Europe proximity

Romania can support regional development toward Bulgaria, Hungary and other nearby markets when logistics and partner structures align.

EU operating environment

EU membership provides a common regulatory and customs framework, while commercial execution remains country-specific.

Romania is not automatically a low-cost retail market. Trading terms, listing expectations, promotions, logistics and local margins can be substantial. We assess the full business case before recommending entry.

Commercial entry and company setup are different decisions.

A brand may be able to enter Romania through an importer, distributor or commercial agent without immediately establishing a Romanian legal entity. If a Romanian company later becomes appropriate, company formation, registered office, accounting and administrative support are handled separately through Startup Romania.

Asia-Europe remains focused on the commercial question: whether the product can win, through which route, at what shelf price and with which local partners.

Should Romania be your first European market?

We can compare Romania with alternative CEE entry markets before you commit to pricing, partners or local infrastructure.
